12:29AM - The Lucky One - A Short NASCAR Fiction

This is a shortie I wrote after reading about Kasey's wreck at IMS. Hope you guys like it.

Note: I don't know or own the Kahnes or Junior or anyone associated with them.

The Lucky One

Kasey let out a groan as he shifted in bed, his entire body protesting the movement. He was extremely sore, his body like one gigantic bruise after the extremely hard lick he had taken the day before at IMS. He had been lucky though, no major injuries of any kind, just a lot of bruises and the usual all over soreness that accompanied any wreck of that magnitude.
"You need something Kase?" Kale called from the hallway after hearing his brother make some noise.
"Yah, could you get me some of my pain medication? I can't move without hurting from all the soreness and I can't get comfortable enough to sleep at the moment either." Kasey replied, pain evident in his voice.
"Sure, no problem. Anything else?"
"Just some water or something to take it with."
"Ok." Kale went into the bathroom and retrieved the bottle contaiing Kasey's most recent prescription, which was from earlier in the season when he had wrecked at Talladega and bruised his ribs a bit. After grabbing the medication, he went into the kitchen and poured some milk into a cup Kasey to take the pills with. He returned to Kasey's room with the medicine and milk in hand. "Here you go Kase." He said as he handed them to his brother.
"Thanks" Kasey said, wincing as he sat up and took the medication and cup from his younger brother. He popped the medication in his mouth and took a healthy drink of milk to down the pills.
"I can't believe how lucky you were Kase, especially considering the damage to the car. When you hit the wall, we were all worried until Kole told us you were ok and out of the care on your own." Kale said, breaking the silence.
"I know. When I saw the car later, I couldn't believe it either."
"When it happened, I heard some of the other spotters jump over to our frequency long enough to ask Kole if he saw any movement because they were worried about you. Most of them were ones that have been around since the days of Earnhardt Sr. and worried about you because they all felt that the lick you took was worse than the one that killed Sr."
"I know, I remember seeing footage of the wreck and I have to say that based on what I felt when I hit the wall that my wreck might have been comparable to his. I just thank God that I made it out alive."
"I do too. Of course, things have changed a lot since Earnhardt's day. The safety has improved so much since then. If this had happened then, you might have been seriously injured or even killed but thanks to the HANS, all of the restraints, and everything, you are all right save for being very sore."
"Yes and I'm going to be feeling it for quite a few days yet I'm sure." Kasey said, yawning slightly as the meds began to kick in.
"Try and get some rest. Give me a holler if you need anything. I'll be in my room working on stuff." Kale said as he headed for the door.
"Ok." Kasey got comfortable in bed and slowly dozed off to sleep.
*
Several hours later, Kasey was awoken by the sound of the phone ringing. He reached around for a minute before finding it and picking it up.
"Hello?" he asked, still half-asleep
"Kasey, it's Junior."
"Oh hey June, what's up?"
"Just calling to see how you were feeling today? That was a pretty bad hit you took yesterday."
"I'm ok, just extremely sore and a bit bruised."
"Good. When I had heard you had gotten out on your own, I had assumed you weren't hurt but I didn't know for sure since I didn't see you after the race."
"Yah, I was lucky enough to be ok and be able to climb out without any assistance."
"Good. Can I be honest with you Kase?"
"Sure."
"I think my dad was watching over you yesterday. When I saw actual footage of your wreck after the race, I saw how bad it actually was and I was surprised and happy to see that you were able to walk away from it virtually uninjured. I think your wreck was worse than dad's and even mom thinks that."
"You might be right about that June. I have to admit that I swear I felt someone there with me as I went into the wall because I felt this peace inside me that if I died then and there, I wasn't alone."
"That could have been my dad all right. I could see him providing peace to someone who is about to potentially endure something he did the day he passed." Junior said, sighing slightly.
"True. No one wants to die alone and no one wants to be scared but sometimes it is hard to avoid either. However, I had to admit I felt neither scared nor alone before the impact."
"Very true. I do have to admit that dad's death, while tragic as it was, was also helpful and instrumental in many changes that were made. Just think about this, if it weren't for some of the safety gear we have these days, there would potentially be more injuries and potentially more deaths as well."
"True. In a way, I guess, as sad as it is to admit, we are the lucky ones."
"Yes, we are and I'm thankful for those who came before us and were instrumental in making changes and making things safer for everyone in the long run."
"I agree. We can't forget the past as much as we might wish to because it is a part of us and our sport."
"Very true. Well, I'm glad that you are all right Kasey. I hope you aren't hurting too much and I hope that you are feeling much better come this weekend."
"Thanks, so do I."
"Well, I will talk to you later."
"Thanks for calling. Later June." Kasey hung up and laid in bed for a few more minutes as he woke up some more. After a bit, he pulled himself out of bed, wincing slightly as his body protested the movement. He walked down the hall and to Kale's room. He stood in the doorway and spoke. "Hey Kale?"
"Yeah?"
"Is the race still on the TiVo?"
"It should be. I haven't recorded over it. Why?"
"I want to see my wreck."
"You sure about that? You usually don't like to see your own wrecks replayed."
"Yes, I'm sure. I want to see what others saw."
"All right."
"Thanks." Kasey made his way towards the living room as quickly as his aching body would allow. He lowered himself onto the couch, wincing slightly as he made himself as comfortable as he could before turning on the tv and the TiVo. He started the TiVo and worked his way through it until he found the beginning of the race. Once he had found the race, he watched it in fastforward as he tried to find the end. When he had reached the point where it was just 3 to go, he hit play, knowing that he was just minutes from the lap where it had all taken place the day before. He watched as everything slowly unfolded infront of his eyes. As the wreck began to take place in real time, his eyes widened as he watched his car hit the wall with such force that even he was now extremely surprised that he had walked away basically unhurt while the car had been pretty much a total loss. "Damn, I really must have had Dale Sr. looking out for me yesterday. I really am one of the lucky ones."

8:39PM - Tour's Misfortunes: Introduction

Time for some more of my writings to share. This new one is a story and a work of fan fiction. It is called Tour's Misfortunes. Tour's Misfortunes is a story I wrote recently and it made still need some work but at the moment, I consider it finished. Tour's Misfortunes is also a tentative title, if you can think of something better, I would love to hear it. Now onto the story. Here is the first part.

*Introduction*

Injuries can often cause touring to grind to a halt for a week or more, sometimes even causing an entire tour to be cancelled or postponed. Rarely do artists continue on with a tour as scheduled without a delay when an injury occurs. They often find it hard to do so, seeing injuries as something that would hold them back from doing their best for their fans. The members of Pray for the Soul of Betty weren't going to let any injuries stop them no matter what. They were embarking on a long tour and looking forward to going out on the road to play their music to all that came to their shows. They had no clue what this tour held in store for them. Of course, their will and determination to continue the tour would be tested when they began to have a string of bad luck.

3:57PM - Love (a poem)

This poem is entitled Love. It is possibly a temporary title. :) I'd love to have feedback. This was inspired by a musician. :)

You stand
Guitar in hand
Poised and ready to take the stage
Like a lion poised to escape its cage
Waiting for the moment to arrive
As your career continues to thrive
On the crowds’ screams you feed
As you too fulfill their need
The energy begins to peak
While you continue to seek
You look for a familiar face
Yet you find someone out of place
One that catches your eye
Not one you’d pass by
Someone you may love
Your matching dove
An angel out of hiding
Yours for the finding
Your love to lend
To be together in the end
